How to Overlay Images Online in 4 Steps
Upload a background, add an overlay, adjust the position and opacity, then download. The whole process takes under 2 minutes — no software, no account required.
Upload Your Images
Background first, then your overlay
Click the upload area or drag your files directly onto it. Upload your background image first, then add one or more overlay images. JPG, PNG, GIF, and WebP are supported.
What to do:
- Click the background upload area and select your base image
- Click the overlay upload area and select the image you want to place on top
- PNG overlays with transparent backgrounds keep their transparency
- Both images preview immediately after upload
- Supported formats: JPG, PNG, GIF, and WebP
Tips:
- Use a PNG for your overlay if it has a transparent background (logo, sticker, cutout)
- The background image sets the canvas size — use the size you want for the final export
- Higher resolution source images produce sharper results when you scale
If something goes wrong:
- Very large file? Resize it before uploading if your browser slows down
- Wrong image in the wrong slot? Re-upload — just click the upload area again
- GIF uploads use only the first frame
Position Your Overlay
Drag it where you want it
Click and drag the overlay to move it on the canvas. Use handles to resize, the settings bar to rotate, and the flip buttons to mirror it.
What to do:
- Click and drag the overlay image to reposition it
- Drag a corner handle to resize
- Use the rotation slider to turn the overlay
- Use the Flip H / Flip V buttons to mirror the overlay
- The overlay stays within the canvas bounds automatically
Tips:
- Zoom in on the canvas to position small overlays more precisely
- Resize the overlay before fine-tuning its position — it is easier to place once it is the right size
- For watermarks, place in a corner and reduce opacity in the next step
If something goes wrong:
- Overlay hard to grab? Click directly on the image, not the edge handles
- Overlay too large to see the canvas? Drag a corner handle inward to shrink it
- Need a common placement? Use the alignment buttons in the settings bar
Adjust Opacity & Appearance
Control how the overlay blends with the background
Use the opacity slider to set how transparent the overlay appears. At 100% it is fully opaque; lower values make it semi-transparent. You can also tile an overlay to create a repeating pattern.
What to do:
- Drag the opacity slider left to make the overlay more transparent
- 0% is fully invisible, 100% is fully opaque — changes update in real time
- Use tile spacing if you want the overlay to repeat across the canvas
- Flip buttons (H/V) are also available in the settings bar
- All adjustments are non-destructive — nothing changes your original files
Tips:
- For a watermark: set opacity to 20–40% so it is visible but not distracting
- For a subtle texture: use a low opacity and adjust tile spacing if needed
- For a logo on a photo: keep opacity at 100% and position it in a low-detail area
If something goes wrong:
- Overlay looks pixelated when scaled up? The source image resolution is too low — use a higher resolution file
- Colors look off after export? Try standard sRGB source images
- Need to see the overlay clearly while positioning? Temporarily set opacity to 100%, then dial it back
Export Your Image
Download the finished composite in full resolution
When you are happy with the result, click Download. The export is a PNG with no watermarks added by PicOverlay.
What to do:
- Use PNG export for a clean final image
- Click the Download button — the file saves to your browser's default download folder
- No account required to download
- No watermarks are added to your exported file
Tips:
- PNG is the safest default for overlays, logos, and transparent assets
- Want to use the result as the background for another overlay? Re-upload the downloaded file
If something goes wrong:
- Download not starting? Check that your browser allows downloads from this site
- File opens in the browser instead of downloading? Right-click and choose Save link as
- Result looks different from the preview? Make sure you are not zoomed in — the export always uses the full canvas

Tips for Common Scenarios
Practical advice for the most common image overlay tasks.
Getting Good Results
- Start with a high-resolution background — it sets the output quality ceiling
- Use PNG for overlays that need transparent backgrounds (logos, cutouts)
- Position the overlay before adjusting opacity — it is easier to see what you are doing
- For symmetrical placement, position by eye then nudge with the input fields
Common Use Cases
- Watermark: low opacity (20–40%), corner placement, PNG with transparent background
- Logo on photo: 100% opacity, position in a low-detail area of the background
- Double exposure: two photos, 50% opacity, Normal or Screen blend mode
- Sticker on image: PNG overlay with transparency, any position, 100% opacity
Export & File Tips
- PNG keeps transparency — use it when the overlay has a see-through background
- Compress the downloaded PNG separately if you need a smaller file
- The export resolution matches your background image — use a large background for large output
- Use up to 5 overlays in one composition
